Fun fact of the day: One of the best selling keyboards of all time is the Razer BlackWidow!! The BlackWidow is one of the most recognized keyboards of the 2010s. However, most people don’t realize what makes this keyboard special. If you browse any forum, subreddit, or Discord server about keyboards, most will tell you that the Razer BlackWidow is overhyped and not a great keyboard overall. However, what most fail to understand is that the keyboard is iconic not for its technical innovation, but for the cultural impact it produced!! There were many “gaming” keyboards that came before the BlackWidow, and some of them were even better. But Razer made some choices that went on to shape our modern image of what a gaming keyboard even is. Instead of selling the keyboard only to gamers at home, Razer started marketing it toward esports players, back when this was not considered a mainstream strategy. This led to a strong association in the esports audience at the time: Mechanical keyboard = Pro gaming keyboard. This alone pretty much popularized mechanical keyboards for gamers. Razer did not invent them, but they invented how to make them visible and cool!! Later that year, Razer released their first backlit version of the BlackWidow, called the BlackWidow Ultimate. It did not have full RGB and was blue-only, but at the time it was something really cool, which most mechanical keyboards did not have!! The BlackWidow might not have been the first mechanical gaming keyboard ever made, the most durable, or the most feature rich. But instead, it became the keyboard that created an iconic look and feel, which later influenced the market and helped shape modern gaming keyboards in the process!!
