My reo is very basic and is not at all fluent. As a Pākehā (non-Māori) person born in Aotearoa New Zealand, I regard Māori as tangata whenua and do not claim to speak on their behalf. Tangata whenua means that Māori people have historic and territorial rights over the land, and I see myself as a guest here as my ancestors were. Te reo and Māori culture has always been part of my life, though early childhood, school, right up into adulthood. I have so much love and respect for Māori and my hope in this video is to respectfully celebrate the beauty of Māori language, and use this space to share it with you all.
