The Secret Book of John, or the Apocryphon of John, was discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt in 1945. This text gives the mythological stories central to Gnosticism and tells the story of how god fell from a state of oneness and perfection into a state of imprisonment in the material world. The tale holds that by salvation can be attained by achieving gnosis, or coming to know our divine nature and our divine origins. By realizing our eternal nature and oneness with god, we become liberated from the prison of flesh and matter. This video will tell the story of Sophia, or Wisdom. Sophia gives birth to an imperfect being, the demiurge, a lesser god named Yaldabaoth. This creator is portrayed as an arrogant, misshapen, blind god, who seeks to imprison the divine spark in matter. These gnostic tales pose striking questions about the nature of the soul, the problem of suffering, and the appropriate human relationship with material reality. These tales encourage us to contemplate the inherent divinity within ourselves and discover the truth about god by discovering the truth about our own souls.
