Cuenca (or Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca) is the capital of Azuay Province and is Ecuador's 3rd largest city. Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known as the most European Ecuadorian city due to the abundance of Spanish colonial architecture. Cuenca is located in Ecuador's highlands at about 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) in elevation and is known for Panama hats (paja toquilla), the "Barranco" or Tomebamba River waterfront, and the abundance of colonial churches, including the Catedral Vieja (Old Cathedral) and the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción (Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception). Some other nearby attractions that you will not want to miss include the Cajas National Park, the Girón Falls (el Chorro de Girón), the town of SigSig for Panama Hats, and the town of Chordeleg for handmade jewelry.
