Many people do not know the Colosseum was once turned into a giant swimming pool. In 80 CE, Emperor Titus wanted to amaze the people of Rome during the first games. Workers took out the wooden floor and sealed the stone underneath. Then they let water flow in from a nearby aqueduct until it was deep enough for real boats. Prisoners, dressed like sailors, fought a pretend sea battle while thousands watched from the seats. After the show, hidden drains emptied the water in only a few hours so the ground could be covered with sand again for normal fights later.
