In this video I will explain what therapy is. More specifically what talking therapy is, so that you can understand how it might help you to resolve the problems that you are facing. There are over 500 different types of psychological or talking therapies, so when you decide to try therapy or counselling it can be hard to know which one to choose. New talking therapies are popping up every day but very few are ever tested properly to see if they actually work. Therapists can be incredibly enthusiastic about the merits of their favourite therapy or counselling method but if there is no research (i.e. solid evidence) to back up their claims you may be wasting your time and money. There is really only one talking therapy that has been proven time and time again to work. This is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be effective with most emotional, psychological and behavioural problems and in counselling with adults, children, couples and families. My recommendation would be to always try Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) before you try any other talking therapy.
