I watched this movie in a room with purple lighting while I took notes with a purple sharpie on a yellow Post-it (La La Land's poster colors) because I, too, am a romantic in the idyllic sense. I feel so passionately about art---movies, nature, paintings, pictures, songs, etc. It's all worthy of serious appreciation and respect. I'm not romantic exclusively in that way, though. Once again in solidarity with Mia and Sebastian, I am a romantic in the amorous sense. I, like them, yearn for romance. I want to exchange smart, meaningful dialogue. I want to be distracted from the pain of this life the way Mia couldn't help but smile despite being rejected by another audition because she looked to the Rialto theater and thought of how she was going to see Sebastian later. I want to hold hands in the theater and mirror movie scenes. I want the words I say to be paid attention to, remembered, and referenced. I want to exchange an "I will always love you." I realized during this viewing that this is the reason why this film touches my heart the way it does. It speaks to me on a different level than any other romance, because it interprets "romance" in both senses: appreciation of art and appreciation of an amorous connection, two things which I feel more deeply than anything. the breakfast club: "A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. A solemn consideration, when I enter a great city by night, that every one of those darkly clustered houses encloses its own secret; that every room in every one of them encloses its own secret; that every beating heart in the hundreds of thousands of breasts there, is, in some of its imaginings, a secret to the heart nearest it!" 1. I'm a huge fan of this movie's concept. Taking place mostly in one spacious room with each main character embodying a stereotype made for an entertaining and non stressful watch. 2. I'm also a huge fan of its theme of human complexity. It struck me similarly to how Charles Dickens did when I read the above quote of his in "A Tale of Two Cities"; both left me feeling convicted about my tendency to categorize people, and inspired to internalize the fact that each person is, to another, infinitely complex. I also appreciate that, according to my extensive research (Letterboxd reviews and Reddit), it appears to be the first major film to apply this theme specifically to teenagers. That fact coupled with the presumed one that it was greenlit by a room full of adults gives it the rare feeling of being made in genuine support of the little guy. Those are my two favorite aspects. In third and fourth are, reverse-respectively, the poster (particularly the Japanese version) and Claire's look. She embodies the word "picturesque" (visually attractive, especially in a quaint or pretty style, according to Oxford.) It's by no means a perfect film, though. John Bender made me deeply uncomfortable. I'm grateful for his archetype's representation and can't imagine the film working without him, but neither of those change how uneasy he made me. just go with it: "Watching whatever my TV tells me to because I don't care anymore" Watching this was the most recent of many instances where I was inspired by a ‪@drewisgooden‬ quote, this occasion's quote being the title of his most recent YouTube video (above). I am so sick of scrolling through streaming platforms looking for something to watch, so I said yes to the first thing that popped up after opening Netflix, and to my lack of surprise (because Drew would never let me down), I had a really fun time with this movie. It was light + hilarious (Jennifer Aniston particularly), which is exactly what I needed at the time. I went over the maximum word count, so this'll continue in the comments XD
