Bones from an ancient breed of dog existing in Japan between eight and ten thousand years ago, have been discovered during archaeological digs in northeast Japan . The Shiba Inu has been designated a national treasure by the Japanese government. The Japanese have a word frequently used to define the fundamental nature of the Shiba Inu: Kan-i. Kan-i is defined as boldness of spirit combined with alertness and a keen sense of awareness. Kan-i embodies the confidence of a dog that knows his own worth. The Shiba is aware of his surroundings at all times. His sense of awareness allows him to recognize friend from enemy. The Shiba will not shy away from a threat nor will he react with unprovoked aggression. A confident Shiba stands his ground and many Shiba owners affirm that their Shiba won't start a fight, but will be glad to finish one. At the entrances and gates of many temples and plazas in Japan, stand statues on either side as guardians. These guardians are statues resembling many types of real and mythical animals. It is said that if you understand the purpose and intent of the guardians, you will understand kan-i. The guardian is always watchful, alert, and prepared to guard his domain with every fiber of his being, but at rest is calmly and patiently observing until the need arises to take action. This is the essence of the Shiba Inu. Shibas tend to think your sole purpose in life is to please them. They generally do not have any desire to please you. Shibas are rarely let off-leash, for they are runners and will tune you out as they quickly disappear from sight, perhaps forever. The Shiba Inu is a Hunter/Stalker and experts say that they are the most undomesticated breed of dog there is and genetically, they are closer to a Wolf than any other breed of dog. Shibas are very intelligent and are cunning. They look for patterns in our behavior, so as to exploit them. I do not recommend for anyone to get a Shiba Inu unless you have a strong will, a good heart, and plenty of time to give to them. If yo want a dog that will bring you your slippers and the newspaper, the Shiba Inu is not for you. Having a Shiba Inu can be like living with a fox because of the dog's nature; WILD.
