#history #newyork #haunted Merchant's House was purchased by the Tredwell patriarch in 1833, and Gertrude entered the world in one of it's bedrooms in 1840. When she was a young lady and of marriageable age, she met the love of her life - the dashing Louis Walton - unfortunately her father forbade the union, leaving Gertrude utterly heartbroken. She remained a spinster the rest of her life. When her father died in 1865, she and her siblings decided to keep the house as a time capsule to their father's memory....and so it stayed until 1933, the year of her death. Merchant's House was saved from destruction by a relative, and is nowadays open to the public. Many visitors and staff have reported encounters with the ghosts of the Tredwell family, who apparently still believe it's their home.
