The sergeant was yelling at the boy behind the house, using obscenities, telling him to put his hands up, to get on the ground, to drop his backpack. It was all very confusing. He had drawn his service weapon. I could hear the boy apologizing repeatedly, I remember that distinctly. He kept saying he was sorry. I was very excited—this was only the second such chance encounter in the region to ever occur per department records, did you know that? Immediately, I began to suspect that the parapsychological interaction between the ERA and the region had led to such an improbable encounter. If this is the case, it raises many more questions. What mechanism would engineer such an encounter? Could parapsychic energy have an inherent attractive force, like magnetism? Or is there a component of intentionality? Perhaps I and the sergeant were unconsciously guiding the boy to us, or, more likely to my mind, his extreme intentionality of seeking was guiding him to other conscious beings, just not the one he wanted to find. Q. Let’s stay on subject, doctor. You were describing the interaction between Sergeant ██████ and the man. A. Yes. The boy began to plead, saying he was just looking for his brother, and that he would like to leave without further incident. Sergeant ██████ grew increasingly agitated. He crossed behind the home and out of my view. After a moment, I heard three shots. It is my understanding that two were discharged by the boy, and one by Sergeant ██████, is that correct? Q. That’s what we believe. A. I don’t believe the boy wanted to shoot the sergeant. He only acted out of desperation. Q. What happened after you heard the shots? A. I couldn’t leave the artifact. I decided to attempt to calm the boy. I called out to him. Q. What happened then? A. He turned the corner holding a pistol in one hand and the sergeant’s rifle in the other. I assured him that I was unarmed and alone. I knew face to face contact would be critical to securing an emotional connection, which would help ensure my safety, so I removed my APP. He seemed to seek reassurance from me about his shooting of Sergeant ██████. I affirmed to him that he had acted reasonably. After trust had been established, I asked if I could check on the sergeant. He consented. Sergeant ██████ was dead by the time I examined him. My examination revealed two bullet wounds, one passing through his right forearm, the other shredding the skin of his right shoulder before entering his upper right neck and, as I suspect, perforating his cervical spinal cord. Additionally, upon falling, he seems to have struck his head on the picket fence, though my suspected cause of death is the gunshot wound to the neck. I assume an autopsy has been conducted? Q. I believe so. A. Do they agree with my conclusions? I would have liked to be present to offer my own observations. Q. I don’t have the report with me. A. I’ll request a copy. Q. Doctor, please. A. I told the boy we were members of a research project, studying the area and the ERA. I will admit to oversharing in a bid to secure his trust. I was afraid for my safety. When I explained the nature of the ██████, he became quite attached to its potential as a tool. He suggested he could use it to find his brother. I strongly warned him against such a course of action, explaining the incident in Nepal that led to us collecting it and the side effects observed in highly trained POs who attuned with it.
