Join me as we journey into the world of Joseph Cornell, who travelled the world, without leaving his doorstep in Queens. He trawled the junk stores looking for gems and exotic ephemera that would eventually became part of his “mindscapes” - three-dimensional representations of his imagination. He built up a vast private museum from his excursions, like a magpie bringing home glittering treasure. Afternoons and weekends, Joseph roamed 1920s New York meticulously rummaging through dark and dusty dens filled with old bric-a-brac. Joseph Cornell never left his house in Utopia Parkway, never got to see the European countries he admired so much, and never married, He poured out all his passions into his “boxes”. I present to you a true American eccentric.
