Egyptomania (or the passion for Ancient Egypt) remains a reality today as an aspect of popular culture (in movies, novels, commercials, the leisure industry...); it also had an influence on decorative arts and architecture. I try to explain how and why this appeared, and how Ancient Egypt occupies a special place in the construction of national identities, especially in the USA.
