During World War II, the U.S. Army was ordered to destroy the Leaning Tower of Pisa. American forces suspected that the Germans were using the tower as an observation post due to its height and strategic view. However, a U.S. Army sergeant, Leon Weisman, was sent to confirm the presence of German snipers. When he arrived, he was so captivated by the beauty and unique structure of the tower that he defied orders and chose not to call in the artillery strike. His decision saved the tower from destruction.
